Rutland's hopes for an Olympic medal were cruelly extinguished this week with the exit of the men's and women's teams from the hockey competition in Beijing.
Former Oakham School student Crista Cullen had an impressive games as she scored two dramatic late winning goals to keep Great Britain in with a chance.

But a frustrating goal-less draw against the USA on Monday meant GB would not qualify from their pool for the semi-finals, where the medals are decided.

It was a similar tale of disappointment for goalkeeper Alistair McGregor, the PE teacher from Knossington School.

He performed heroics for the GB men's team but they were eliminated despite a highly creditable 3-3 draw against defending champions Australia on Tuesday.

McGregor and his team-mates finish with a fifth-place play-off against South Korea on Saturday.

Crista has been through a range of emotions in the last week, from joy to despair.

Last Thursday she jubilantly flicked home a penalty corner to give GB a 2-1 win over New Zealand to keep their medal hopes alive.

Crista repeated the trick in the next match with an equally dramatic last gasp penalty corner strike to defeat Japan 2-1.

However, that draw with the States was enough to knock the team out.

Great Britain ended up sixth after losing a play-off with Australia today (Friday).

Crista had a penalty corner strike brilliantly saved before the Hockeyroos took the lead.

In a desperate attempt to snatch a draw and take the match into extra time, GB removed goalkeeper Beth Storry and Crista assumed kicking-back duties in her place.

But there was no dramatic ending as the Aussies netted a second past her at the death.
